I
During the excavation, we found a record written on a parchment scroll, which was deciphered by scholars who have studied ancient languages.
"Their sudden attack caught us off guard.
"The lord was determined to resist and not to yield.
"Battle reports from the border indicate that the invaders came from the Greater - the greedy, powerful, insane, bloodthirsty race of rulers who had their eyes on our land and people.
"I am still fighting, and we all keep fighting. We will be slaves in a deep pit if we surrender, it would be better to die.
"The Greater are not invincible. As soldiers defending the city, we are convinced of this. Dozens of Greater have been killed by me.
"We gradually learned about them in fierce and painful battles, but the huge gap in strength was still difficult to bridge. The defensive line was forced to tighten and we had to abandon each city one by one.
"The capital is behind us, and there is no way back."
II
This seemed to be a farewell letter. What followed was made difficult to read by the torn parchment, and we tried to recover part of it:
"Wielding the swords, they stormed into the city, killing indiscriminately, uttering mad laughter. The blood under their feet gathered into a river, dyeing the whole city red.
"We have lost our hometown.
"With the only soldiers left, I decided to make a final counterattack. We secured a valley to buy time for our people to escape, even though it looked like there was nowhere left to run - the Swords Fields of the Greater was everywhere.
"We were all prepared to fight to the death. Within a few days, an army of the Greater found us.
"The leader was a tall Greater warrior who held a huge runic sword. I later learned that he was the King of the Greater.
"That huge sword was inscribed with the races that had been conquered by them.
"My race might also be inscribed on it, but we are still fighting.
"Perhaps impressed by our bravery, the Greater who stormed the valley did not kill us, but sent us into a Swords Field for captivity.
"Still I didn't know that what awaited ahead was even more terrifying."
III
We had already roughly learned about this extinct race called the Greater - and thankfully they had long since died out in history.
A cold sweat even oozed from the forehead of the scholar as he translated the last paragraph.
"The Swords Field is inhabited by a number of the Greater people with different costumes and distinct classes. Strange hatcheries scattered in the corners of the Swords Field.
"I was chained to a metal bed. Only for a short period each day could I be put down to move my joints or address necessary needs.
"At first I thought it was a form of torture that drove us to mental breakdown and active surrender, but not until a few days later when I witnessed what happened to my companions.
"They must be demons!
"The Greater guard pinched the man's jaw and shoved a worm, fresh from its follicle and still laced with yellow-green goo, into his mouth.
"I even screamed in horror as I watched the fat worm twist and burrow through his throat. Someone soon came along to shut me up.
"The man was fastened to the metal bed, bruised and battered. Something seemed to be crawling through his veins. He was in so much pain that he couldn't stand it. His whole body arched back over. His mouth opened wide. But his throat was blocked and no sound could come out.
"Soon he became calm and the Greater loosened him up - and he, in turn, became a new member of the Greater.
"Parasite... No wonder they are always on the road to war and conquest. Next, it may be my turn."
